Netflix Book Adaptations

How many of us are watching a lot of Netflix while socially isolating? Every week Netflix is uploading multiple new and exciting movies and tv series to help alleviate our boredom. The streaming giant is a great source for book adaptations as well, with a large portion of their original productions being inspired by books or comics. So, if you enjoy reading the book before watching the movie, check out the following materials based on new or upcoming content:



“The Stranger” by Harlan Coben

Released on Netflix January 2020

“The Stranger” is a mystery about a man named Adam Price who runs into the Stranger and learns a devastating secret about his wife, Corinne. As he confronts her, the mirage of his perfect life disappears as if it never existed at all. Soon Adam finds himself tangled in something far darker he ever expected.





The “Locke and Key Series” by Joe Hill

Released on Netflix February 7th

This very popular new series is based on a collection of comic books written by horror writer Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez. Locke & Key tells the supernatural story of Keyhouse, a New England mansion, with mysterious keys that can be used to unlock doors in magical ways.






“The Devil All the Time” by Donald Ray Pollock

Released on Netflix May 2020

“The Devil All the Time” is a psychological thriller that follows disparate characters in post-World War II Southern Ohio and West Virginia, including a disturbed war veteran, a husband and wife who are serial killers, and a false preacher. The film stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Bill Skarsgård.






“Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance

Released on Netflix November 2020

Hillbilly Elegy looks at the struggle of working-class white America by highlighting his own family’s experience growing up in the Rust Belt. Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and poignant analysis of a culture in crisis. The film is directed by Ron Howard and will star Amy Adams and Glenn Close.





The “Bridgerton” series by Julia Quinn

Release to be determined

“The Duke and I” is the first novel in the Bridgerton series. This regency romance tells the story of Daphne Bridgerton as she navigates the sometimes-treacherous waters of finding a husband in the 1800s. Fans of Jane Austen will enjoy the funny and emotional story. Shonda Rhimes is helming the Netflix series.
