Book clubs still popular? Oh yeah! Especially since Hollywood mega-stars like Reese Witherspoon, Emma Watson and Jimmy Fallon have jumped on the book-wagon so to speak. While celebrity book clubs are currently trending – no host ever did it bigger, better or longer than Oprah. In 1996 Oprah kicked off her inaugural book club with Deep End of the Ocean followed by The Book of Ruth with hundreds more titles added over the decades.
So what are the ‘star celebs’ reading in their book clubs? For Oprah’s latest pick, the first lady of talk shows features the former First Lady’s bestselling memoir, Becoming by Michelle Obama. Reese Witherspoon’s April selection, The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo, is a sweeping historical mystery set in 1930s Malaysia. Check out Reese’s previous selections, most notably Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Library Book. UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and Feminist Emma Watson encourages her readers to tackle Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir by Kai Cheng Thom.
But wait! Online book clubs aren’t your only option. Currently Caledon Public Library (CPL) has over 10 active clubs, including a new ‘mystery’ book club. Join our members for a social evening (or afternoon) discussing such titles as Born a Crime (fabulous memoir by Trevor Noah), The German Girl and Massey Murder (historical fiction) along with gripping thrillers like The Perfect Girl. Alternately, why not host your own club? With CPL’s Book-in-a-Bag option, patrons can pick from a list of discussion-worthy titles, plus take home a complete book club kit with 10-15 copies, author biography and discussion questions included.
